None of us are born with the knowledge of how to communicate well in a relationship, but there are communication strategies that can help. 1) Speak in short segments to make it easy for our listener to digest everything we’ve said. 2) Summarize. Repeat the key points our spouse just made, assuring that everyone is on the same page. 3) Say “yes…and” instead of “but.” “But” cancels out what was just said, “yes” acknowledges that our spouse made a valid point, and “and” gives us a chance to add our own. 4) Monitor for heat and speed. If anger arises, take a break. 5) Monitor for exhaustion, hunger, and overload. Again, take necessary breaks.
