Marriage Advice: A Simple Tip for Maintaining a Long-Term Relationship

Sarah Holley led a study at San Francisco State University that checked in with middle-aged and older couples three times a year over the course of thirteen years with the intent of recording how they dealt with conflict. The study was interested in all kinds of conflict, from housework to finances. The couples were also videotaped so that researchers could study various types of communication they displayed when confronted with hard topics. The study found that while couples still pressured each other and blamed each other for various problems as they aged, they also increased their tendency to change the subject away from conflict.
