It is indeed an art, we are assured, because it requires not just recognizing the bind, but describing it clearly, initiating the client to reflect on it personally, and ultimately act on it. It is a challenging process that may take time, typically taking longer to dismantle the longer the bind has been active. A good way to locate hypocritical binds is to look for consistent hypocrisies throughout sessions which can indicate a recurring problem. Typically, one partner may be angry and demanding something of the other partner that they are themselves unwilling to provide.
