We have heard of “the power of positive thinking,” but being aware and concerned about the pitfalls of life can keep us safe and alive. Skeptics and pessimists have, in their way, contributed to the advancement of humankind. Recent studies have shown that it is better for a couple to argue than to pretend everything is OK. Dealing honestly with issues is better than letting your partner think you accept cheating, lying, overspending, or some other unacceptable behavior. Other “negatives” that have a positive side are: being bad at something while learning a new skill, honest criticism, disobedience to oppressive rulers, and saying no to things you don’t want to do.
