It’s difficult to say how well therapy works in the long-term, because what makes relationships and therapy “work” is still a mystery. Short-term results do show that couples therapy increases relationship satisfaction for many people. It’s normal for couples to enter therapy with the hope of changing each other. However, more realistic goals for couples are learning how to listen to one another, to express needs and feelings, to take personal responsibility, and to receive validation from one another. Couples therapy works best for people who want to learn more about themselves, are curious about their partners, and are willing to change their own behavior.
