Authentic communication is an art that demands not only that we voice our own needs and opinions, but also that we genuinely listen to others. ‘Speaking to’ someone is much different than ‘speaking with’ someone. ‘Speaking with’ someone requires a shift in perspective from one of control to one of collaboration. ‘Speaking with’ someone requires space for everyone in the conversation to fully participate. Another facet of listening is asking questions. If we presume to know what a person needs or thinks, that person may feel like they’re not being heard. If we can learn to be quiet, wait to form opinions, and actually listen to each other, then we’ll be much closer to mastering effective communication.
