Contrary to the age old advice to “never go to bed angry,” it may be better for some couples to postpone arguments until the next day rather than hash things out when they are angry and tired. Anger makes us less able to think creatively and, therefore, less able to solve problems. Sleep deprivation affects us the same way as anger, so working on issues when we are well rested and calm makes sense. Another trick to dealing with late night arguments is to set a time limit for discussion of emotional topics like how to spend time or money. Maybe another old saying is better advice: Let’s sleep on it!
