HSP’s, or “highly sensitive people,” have a very high tolerance for dealing with difficult people. Where another person might flee, an HSP may buckle down and get prepared to deal with trouble. It isn’t that they are drawn to difficult relationships, it is more of a drive to help those who need it and a belief that their efforts can make an unhealthy person healthy. The common result, however, is that instead of helping the troubled person, the highly sensitive person ends up being dragged down into an unhealthy state of mind as well, where their self-esteem then gets too low to escape the negative relationship.
