Happiness is fleeting. Even lottery winners find happiness fades quickly. Psychologists call it "hedonic adaptation." A recent paper on the subject says that there are two reasons that happiness does not last. One is that we stop noticing the changes that once made us happy. The other reason is that we acclimate. We lose ten pounds, we’re happy, then we want to lose ten more. We made a small fortune then we want to make more. If we want happiness to last, we need to do two things: create variety in our lives and be more appreciative of the good things that happen.
