American society is infatuated by the idea of the “soul mate.” The idea is celebrated across the media, all propelling the idea that every person has a single perfect match designated by fate into the American consciousness. The idea of a soul mate, however, is not something that can be objectively measured. It is based on ephemeral infatuation sparked by physical attraction and charm. Brad Wilcox, a sociologist at the University of Virginia, performed a study that found that over 60% of men and women in the United States believe in soul mates. The study also found that people who truly believe in soul mates are 150% more likely to divorce.
