Previous studies have shown that women tend to sleep less when sharing a bed with a partner and that both men and women move around more when sleeping together. However, new research shows that there are many physical and emotional benefits of sleeping in the same bed as your partner. One theory suggests that for couples in healthy relationships sleeping together promotes feelings of safety and security. This may lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It may also reduce cytokines which are involved with inflammation, and boost the “love hormone” oxytocin which is known to ease anxiety. The psychological benefits of sleeping together may far outweigh the potential costs of restlessness or interrupted sleep.
