The Importance of Breathing Correctly

Most people don’t even think of it as they go through their day, but breathing is one of the most important things they do. Learning to consciously pause to take a few deep, relaxing breaths can encourage proper breathing habits and greatly improve overall health. The respiratory system is responsible for eliminating 70% of metabolic waste, but as people get older, they lose lung capacity and respiratory function. This loss of function ultimately decreases health and life expectancy. Breathing in the upper chest activates the fight or flight response, which speeds up heart rate, slows digestion, and stresses organs. Breathing lower in the chest relaxes heart rate and slows the digestive system.
