More families in America are now sharing quarters with extended family, in-laws, and adult children and all parties must find ways to co-exist peacefully. Tension, anger, and resentments often lead to depression or anxiety. Those who are able to forgive the transgressions of others find that while forgiveness isn’t always easy, it can dramatically improve mental health and relationships. In Pakistan, married women live in with their in-laws. Riffat Sadiq of the University of Karachi in Pakistan studied 120 women living in stressful households. He concluded women who forgave emotional hurt or criticism had lower levels of depression, anxiety, and anger, and higher relationship satisfaction than those who didn’t forgive.
